Report finds
for Dead Birds

West Nile > Sentinel Updates > Reporting Dead Birds

Q. How do I report a finding of a dead bird?
A.
As a part of Florida’s West Nile surveillance system, a bird mortality reporting database was established in 2000 through cooperation between the Bureau of Epidemiology and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC). This reporting system is located on the FWCC website at http://wld.fwc.state.fl.us/bird/ (or through the FWCC homepage at http://www.floridaconservation.org then choose "Surveillance for Wild Bird Die offs Database"). Anyone who discovers a dead bird will be able to enter the requested information and submit the report via the Internet). An address (or the closest address) of the dead bird is critical to tracking bird mortality and also for potential carcass retrieval.

Q. Is there a Phone number I can call to report the finding of a dead bird?
A. Yes, residents can call the West Nile hotline to report dead birds, hear information about the disease and obtain referrals to Health Department staff at 1-800-871-9703.

Q. Is there a local number within Palm Beach County Health Department I can call?
A. Yes, residents can call the Division of Environmental Health at
561-355-3070.
