About

The Palm Beach County Health Department is a service organization responsible for public health programs for a growing county of over one million residents, with both urban and rural communities. In addition to the traditional core public health programs of disease prevention and control, environmental health, school health, and health education, the Health Department shares responsibility for primary care of the medically indigent population of the county with the private sector. Over a million services are provided annually at six health centers throughout the county. A staff of over 1,000 professionals and support staff are employed.

The Palm Beach County Health Department has a long history of developing new and innovative programs to meet the needs of its communities. Staff has the opportunity to participate in the planning and the implementation of these programs.

The residency program offers a valuable learning opportunity to develop and increase physician competencies in public health practice, program planning and administration in a dynamic and unique agency.

The residency program has public health as its primary focus. We cover all aspects of preventive medicine but our goal is to train physicians to have an understanding of the importance of public health as a component of preventive medicine.

We are proud of our partnerships with other community organizations. These allow us to provide an even broader range of experiences. Mental health, chemical dependency and community organization are provided to our residents by our community partners.

The residency program has an Affiliation Agreement with Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Residents in the Residency Program are employed through (NSU-COM). The school is responsible for salary, benefits, and other employer obligations. The Palm Beach County Health Department is responsible for all the educational aspects of the practicum year and NSU provides the residents an opportunity to complete their Master of Public Health (MPH) which is required as part of the residency. The program is open to both osteopathic and allopathic physicians. This affiliation allows for enhancement of programs at both institutions.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Osteopathic Association sanction this affiliation. Allopathic (MD) residents who successfully complete the program will be eligible to sit for the certifying examination given by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Osteopathic (D.O.) residents who successfully complete the program will be eligible to sit for the certifying examination given by the American Osteopathic Board of Occupational and Preventive Medicine.
