Join the Fight Against Heart Disease

Go Red for Women - www.goredforwomen.org

Heart disease is known as the silent killer among women because it happens without them even recognizing the signs and symptoms. It is a number of abnormal conditions affecting the heart and the blood vessels in the heart. Coronary Artery Disease is the most common type and is the leading cause of heart attacks. Other facts about heart disease include:

  • Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States.
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of disability among women.
  • American women are 4 to 6 times more likely to die of heart disease than breast cancer.
  • Heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined..

Although there are several factors that increase the risk of coronary artery disease and heart attacks, there are certain factors that can be changed. The major risk factors you can change, treat or control with adjusting your lifestyle include:
  • Tobacco Usage (Smoking)
  • High Blood Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Obesity and Overweight
  • Diabetes Mellitus

Now that you know more about heart disease the main goal is to prevent it from affecting your and the lives of your family. The first Friday in February is the nationwide Go Red for Women day. This campaign was developed 5 years ago to raise awareness about heart disease among women. So don’t keep silent about this silent killer.
