Renew Yourself in the New Year

The New Year is here and that may mean to start new resolutions in some aspects of your life. If health is one of your resolutions for this year, the following information can be useful to you:

  • After overeating during the holidays, we all need to shed off some pounds and the best way to do this is by been active.

  • To become active does not mean that you have to join the gym, Saladsyou can be active just by dusting your house or walking with your children.

  • If you already do some household shores during the week then add moderate activities such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, taking brisk walks, dancing. Talk to you doctor before you start any type of physical activity in your lifestyle.

  • Listen to your body for aches, pains, shortness of breath, or any other abnormal signs and symptoms. Stop when these occur and talk to your doctor.

  • In addition to physical activity, you must pay attention to your eating habits; otherwise you will not reach/maintain an appropriate weight.

  • My Pyramid is an excellent guideline to eating healthy as long as it is followed by the suggestions of a registered dietitian.

  • Three meals a day and a variety of all food groups from My Pyramid are recommended to reach/maintain a healthy weight.

  • Don’t forget the water. It is recommended to drink at least 8 (8oz) cups of water every day. Juice and other drinks do not substitute water.

  • Limit eating/drinking out. This habit can easily put pounds on you. When going out, watch your portion sizes, you can cut down lots of calories this way.

  • Pack your meals/beverages whenever possible. Monitor the fats, salt and sweets that you add to your foods/drinks while cooking and before you eat/drink them.

  • If at all possible, keep a log of your eating habits and compare it to My Pyramid. Also, keep a log of your physical activity habits to show the progress you have made or to record conditions that need attention.

  • Above all, be patient with the new habits you are making and enjoy all you do for a healthier lifestyle
