Teen Pregnancy Prevention-
What can we do?
<< Back to Press

For Release   Thursday, 26th March,  2001

Family planning and education are an integral part of the Palm Beach County Health Department’s objectives toward all achieving a healthy lifestyle. Thus, the department commissioned Cornerstone Consulting to survey the area and identify what needs to be done to curtail teen pregnancies.

Palm Beach County has always been proud of the fact that its teen pregnancy and teen birth rates are below the national and state averages. However, the cornerstone study was able to identify four areas within the county that these rates were three times higher than any state, local or national average. In addition, the study found six other areas that the pregnancy and birth rates among teens were two times greater than average.

Where does this lead us?
What does this tell us?
How can we better educate our teens to prevent unwanted pregnancies?
What reproductive health services are available to at-risk youth and are services appropriate?

Many of these issues are addressed in the attached consultant’s report on teen pregnancy and prevention. Further information can be obtained by calling  561/355-3013.

In addition to the Palm Beach County Health Department it should be noted that the following organizations committed resources to this study:

Governor’s Council for Community Health Partnerships, Inc.
Children’s Services Council
Quantum Foundation
