For Release Thursday, 26th
March, 2001
The latest results from blood tests on the 48 sentinel chickens show no signs of St. Louis encephalitis, Equine Encephalitis or West Nile Virus in the Palm Beach County area. The chickens have been tested bi-weekly since May. In lieu of the increased activity around the state testing will be taking place weekly beginning August 27, 2001.
Residents are being encouraged to report dead birds to the Florida Wildlife Commission or Palm Beach County Health Department for tracking and surveillance for possible West Nile Virus.
Mosquito activity in the area remains average for this time of year. With short-term rainfall predicted to be low, conditions remain not favorable for population amplification. Mosquito control continues with ground larvacidal treatments and adulticidal treatments.
Residents are reminded to:
- Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are likely to be looking for blood meals.
- If you must be outdoors when mosquitoes are active, cover up by wearing shoes, socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts.
- Use mosquito repellant containing DEET according to manufacturers directions
- Eliminate stagnant water in any receptacles in which mosquitoes might breed.?
