March, 2001
BELLE GLADE, The Names Quilt of persons who have died of AIDS will be on display at the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center, Palm Beach Community College, in Belle Glade Monday March 5, 2001 as part of Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS.
HIV and AIDS has had a marked increase among minority populations in Palm Beach County as more than half of all cases reported are in the black community. Area ministers in conjunction with The Balm and Gilead have established the first week in March as the time for all black churches and their congregations to pray that people suffering from the disease will be healed.
The quilt, part of the national display that filled the mall in Washington D.C., will be displayed from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at 1977 College Drive on the PBCC Campus in Belle Glade. Family members, friends and others have contributed a patch to the quilt in memory of someone they knew. Prayer services will take place in churches throughout coastal, central and western Palm Beach County.
The quilt and its display are being sponsored by: Names Project of South Florida, Palm Beach Community College, Palm Beach County Health Department, HIV Sub-Committee, Health Care District of Palm Beach County, Treasure Coast Health Council, Palm Beach County HIV Care Council, and Belle Glade Discount Pharmacy.
