PALM BEACH COUNTY The Palm Beach County Health Department is asking persons who have uncooked portions of black grouper purchased from Marcellos Place, at 306 West Mango Street, in Lantana on Friday, October 26, or Saturday, October 27, 2001 to return it to the store.
Late Saturday evening, October 27, three persons, two females and one male were diagnosed with ciguatera poisoning, a toxin emitted from larger reef fish in the Caribbean, South Florida, and South Pacific. All of these persons consumed the black grouper at a Lantana restaurant supplied by Marcellos Place. The toxin is undetectable and cannot be neutralized through cooking or other preparation. The symptoms usually occur within 24 hours and include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and sensation reversal (hot feels cold). All three individuals should be fully recovered within two weeks.
Persons having consumed this fish can call the Palm Beach County Health Department at 561-840-4500 to consult with an epidemiological nurse. About 50,000 cases of ciguatera poisoning occur each year worldwide. These are the first such cases in South Florida this year.
