PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL—The Board of County Commissioners today declared Wednesday April 3, 2002 “Kick Butts” day with a proclamation given to, Students Working Against Tobacco Coordinator, Sarah Spence.

The first Wednesday in April during National Public Health Week has been a day of tobacco prevention awareness. Members of SWAT in Palm Beach County middle and high schools participate in tobacco prevention activities on their school campuses in an effort to get the tobacco free message out to students.

At least 10 schools will be displaying “tobacco-free” banners and asking students to sign that they are aware of the dangers behind the use of tobacco products. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day and wristbands distributed with a smoke free message.

Roosevelt Middle School is hosting a soccer match between SWAT members and School Staff. Those who take the tobacco free oath will be given a wrist -band admitting them to the game. Other participating schools are, Boca Raton Middle, Gold Coast Community High, Lantana Middle, Olympic Heights High, Pahokee Middle/Sr., Palm Beach Lakes High, Roosevelt Middle, Wellington Landings Middle, Woodlands Middle, and West Tech High.

“It’s really gratifying to have the students so enthused about growing up in a smoke free society. I know that with the commissions proclamation they will be able to get the message out even better to not only students but, adults as well.” Commented Sarah Spence. Each year about 400,000 persons die from tobacco caused diseases.
