PALM BEACH COUNTY—Flu activity in Palm Beach County has been on the rise the last few weeks but there is still time to receive the flu vaccine as the peak of the flu season won’t occur until February and lasts until March.
Persons who missed getting their shot earlier may due so on Saturday, January 12, 2002 from 10:00 am to 1:00 PM at the Health Department’s Lantana Health Center, 1250 Southwinds Drive, Lantana.
During late December about 2% of patients visiting physicians reported having influenza. This number increases to more than 4% before it begins its decline in late February. The flu is characterized as having a temperature of greater than 100 F plus a cough and or sore throat. Other symptoms that may accompany the flu include chills, muscle aches, runny nose, weakness/fatigue and headache.
Other than the vaccine, Health officials had a few additional tips on ways to protect against influenza that include:
Wash your hands with soap and water, and wash them often.
Cover you nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing—then wash your hands before touching objects.
Don’t set used facial tissues on tables or counters. Immediately throw them into a waste container.
Stay out of crowds when people are coughing and sneezing during flu season.
Information on flu and other immunizations can be obtained from the Health Department at 561-840-4568.
