RIVIERA BEACH, FL-A Rabies Alert for central and northern Palm Beach County, has been extended another 30 days following the capture and rabies confirmation of a raccoon in McArthur State Park on Singer Island October 19, 2002. The original alert was scheduled to be lifted October 31, 2002 by the Palm Beach County Health Department, but has been extended until November 19, 2002 due to the latest finding. The Rabies Alert Zone covers the areas bounded by Lantana Road on the south, west to Highway 441, and north to the Martin County Line. The eastern boundary is the Atlantic Ocean.
The latest case brings the number of human exposures to seven and the total confirmed rabid animals to 26, this year, the highest number of animal cases since 1953. The alert was originally put into effect for 60 days beginning July 30 but has been extended three times with each new confirmation of rabid animals. This latest incident involved no human exposure.
Health Department Director Dr. Jean Malecki continues to warn residents about feeding or handling wildlife, and other stray animals. Citizens are being advised to be especially cautious in the alert zone.
Domestic animals, dogs and cats, over four months of age are required to be vaccinated against rabies and wear a current rabies license tag. Shots can be obtained through a veterinarian or by calling Animal Care and Control at 561 233-1272.
