PALM
BEACH COUNTY, FL- Health
Director Jean M. Malecki,
MD, MPH, FACPM has been
profiled in the book “The
Faces of Public Health”
which made its debut Sunday,
November 7, 2004 at the
American Public Health
Association meeting in
Washington, D.C.
The book, published by Pfizer, is a tribute to the more than
400,000 people who work in
public health in the United
States. The 25-featured
faces were nominated from
across the country and
exemplify the best of public
health and work tirelessly
every day in their
communities to make a
difference.
“Dr. Malecki, works tirelessly for the health of all
Floridians and is truly an
asset to the State. It is an
honor to have her as part of
our Public Health Team,”
Florida Secretary of Health
John O. Agwunobi, MD, MBA,
MPH, said.
Malecki was integral to the anthrax investigation in Palm
Beach County. Her foresight
and training prevented many
people, who were exposed to
the anthrax from being
infected.
However, bioterrorism is not
Malecki’s primary effort.
She sites obesity as a
public health threat and
points out that over 33
percent of children are
overweight putting them at
risk for diabetes,
retinopathy, cardiovascular
disease and renal failure.
Always the eternal optimist
Malecki feels confident this
can be overcome with the
right messaging on healthy
diets and exercise.
Malecki will be recognized along with the other honorees at a
dinner tonight, in
Washington, D.C.
