During Volunteer recognition
week the Palm Beach County
Health Department recognized
its volunteer of the year
Phyllis Gephart.
Gephart, a West Palm Beach resident, has volunteered with the
health department since
1997. Her volunteer service
began as a part of the
Godparent program with Head
Start in Jupiter. She acts
as the liaison to the health
department for godparent
recruitment, events, and
donations. Through the years
she has also coordinated the
food and toy give-aways to
the needy during the
holidays, worked in records
at the various clinics and
is the treasurer for the
West Palm Beach Health
Center Volunteer Auxiliary.
Within the Health Department there are 197 volunteers working
in the six health centers
providing courteous friendly
service through the
information desk, filing in
the records area, answering
phones, reading to clients
and assisting with insurance
information. In addition
there are another 115
volunteers working in
special outreach programs
like the immunization van
and in conjunction with the
Governor’s Council for
Community Health
Partnerships to improve the
benefits health department
clients receive. Annually
the health department
volunteers give over $500
thousand in goods and
services to the community.
Health department Director Jean M. Malecki , M.D. said,
“Volunteers are a very
important part of the
overall operation of the
health department because of
the service they provide to
the community. I cannot
emphasize enough their
importance.”
Volunteers have been assisting the community through the
health department for 28
