WEST PALM BEACH, FL- During Volunteer recognition week the Palm Beach County Health Department recognized its volunteer of the year Phyllis Gephart.

Gephart, a West Palm Beach resident, has volunteered with the health department since 1997. Her volunteer service began as a part of the Godparent program with Head Start in Jupiter. She acts as the liaison to the health department for godparent recruitment, events, and donations. Through the years she has also coordinated the food and toy give-aways to the needy during the holidays, worked in records at the various clinics and is the treasurer for the West Palm Beach Health Center Volunteer Auxiliary.

Within the Health Department there are 197 volunteers working in the six health centers providing courteous friendly service through the information desk, filing in the records area, answering phones, reading to clients and assisting with insurance information. In addition there are another 115 volunteers working in special outreach programs like the immunization van and in conjunction with the Governor’s Council for Community Health Partnerships to improve the benefits health department clients receive. Annually the health department volunteers give over $500 thousand in goods and services to the community.

Health department Director Jean M. Malecki , M.D. said, “Volunteers are a very important part of the overall operation of the health department because of the service they provide to the community. I cannot emphasize enough their importance.”

Volunteers have been assisting the community through the health department for 28 years. Persons interested in helping can contact the office of public/private partnerships at 561-681-2524.
