PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL- National Public Health Week is April 3 -9 and the public health community is coming together to identify ways of improving the health of people in our area.

On Friday, April 7, 2006, 10:30 AM, at the Children’s Services Council, 1919 North Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach, a community-wide strategic planning initiative, Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) will be announced.

Facilitated by the Palm Beach County Health Department, MAPP is a community-wide strategic planning tool for improving public health, as well as an action oriented process to help communities prioritize public health issues, identify resources for addressing them, and take action.

Health Department Director, Jean M. Malecki, MD said, “This is a great opportunity to engage and challenge the community to take a visionary look at what will be needed in the future and to be a part of those health solutions.”

In addition to the Health Department, the leadership team for this initiative is made up of representatives from all segments of the local public health system including business, education, public safety, environmental health, philanthropy, community agencies and organizations. With a strong emphasis on community involvement, MAPP puts the “public” back in public health.

Malecki added, “Millions of dollars are available in grants from the Federal Government to support local public health systems that have strategized and set the priorities to improve the health, safety and well being of the community. “

The 10 essential public health services are:

  • Monitor health status to identify health problems needing attention
  • Diagnose and investigate health problems and health hazards Example lead levels
  • Inform and educate Example—Obesity, Tuberculosis, Nutrition
  • Mobilize communities to address health problems Example Teen Pregnancy, HIV/AIDS
  • Develop policies and plans that can be funded and effective
  • Enforce laws and regulations Example water and sewer systems
  • Link people to needed health services Example: Health Care District Criteria
  • Assure a competent health services workforce
  • Evaluate health services to meet the needs of the population
  • Conduct research for new innovations
