PALM
BEACH COUNTY, FL – Kids
assert your independence,
it’s all natural, return to
the ways of your
grandparents down on the
farm and of course smoke,
smoke, smoke.
Cigarette companies are targeting the youth market through
music, magazines, cartoons,
give-a-ways and many other
methods. Hook-em early and
you got them for life, as
shortened as it may be, is
the theme. The Palm Beach
County Health Department
tobacco prevention program
has teamed with local
television stations and
internet providers to ask
the youth of the county, 10
years to 19 years, to create
their own Anti-Smoking
commercials, post them on
the web and watch them on
television.
There are many ways to encourage people to stop smoking but
sometimes hearing it from a
peer is the best method,
said the Health Department’s
Tobacco Coordinator, Janiece
Davis. We are asking
young people to help us get
the word out on smoking by
creating their own :30
second commercial and
uploading it on to the
internet. The top four
commercials will be eligible
for a prize and will run in
late May on
WPEC CBS12 ,
WPBF
channel 25 and
WFLX Fox 29
as well as have continual
posting on the stations
websites, the health
department website and
others.
For details on how to enter or for more information on how to
upload a commercial go to
the health department
website at
www.pbchd.com or
call the tobacco prevention
department at 561-681-2524
ext. 133. Adults can call
the Quitline at
1-877-822-6669 and receive
valuable information on ways
they too can quit.
