WEST
PALM BEACH, FL—The 34th
Annual Volunteer Awards were
held on May 18th at the
Airport Hilton honoring the
dedication and commitment to
better health in Palm Beach
County. This year’s theme
“Volunteer$ Are Pricele$$”
was emceed by CBS 12 news
anchor Eric Roby and
acknowledged honorees for
outstanding contributions to
the programs that promote
and protect the health and
welfare of all residents of
Palm Beach County.
The event honored 22 individuals for outstanding service to
the community, including
C.L. Brumback Volunteer of
the Year Award winner Dr.
Russell L. Anderson and
Volunteer Physician of the
Year Dr. Ira (Ike) Jacobson.
Three programs were also
highlighted, The Pajama
Project, Project Linus and
Feeding South Florida. The
ceremony was bittersweet
with a heartwarming tribute
to the late Dr. Carl
Brumback, Palm Beach
County’s first champion for
public health who passed
away earlier year.
Dr. Russell Anderson has been an Orthopedist for over 55
years. For the last 12
years, he has generously
acted as a Volunteer
Provider at the West Palm
Beach Health Center. Dr.
Anderson has been a member
of the Palm Beach County
Medical Society’s Project
Access program for seven
years. This program serves
uninsured residents of Palm
Beach County to treat low
income patients with little
or no fee.
Dr. Anderson provides a specialty service that would not be
possible for underserved and
uninsured patients. Dr.
Anderson has been a valuable
asset for both the Health
Department and the
community.
Dr. Jacobson is a podiatrist and has served the Glades area
for 22 years. He too, is a
member of Project Access.
Dr. Jacobson also has had an
ongoing policy in his office
that if any patients are
uninsured, he accepts only
what the patient or the
family can afford no matter
what treatment is necessary.
On numerous occasions, he has been involved with the Health
Department when free clinics
and health fairs are offered
so he can treat and educate
people in regard to foot
care. During the aftermath
of the earthquake in Haiti,
numerous refugees came to
Florida needing foot health
care and it was provided in
his office without
acceptance of payment.
“These volunteers provide an excellent service toward the
health our community,” said
Health Department Director
Alina Alonso, M.D. “Their
selfless contribution should
be recognized each and every
day.”
